From Commission to Independent Stylist: The Blueprint for Taking Control of Your Career

Alright, let’s talk about that next big move, leaving behind commission-based work and becoming an independent stylist. You’re craving more freedom, more control over your career, and of course, more money. But before you make the leap, let’s get your plan in place so you can do it right, with confidence.

Going independent isn’t just about switching chairs; it’s about running your own business, setting your own terms, and building something that’s yours. Ready to make it happen? Let’s dive into the steps you can start taking right now to make that transition smoother.

Step 1: Evaluate Where You Stand

Before you jump ship, ask yourself some key questions:

Do you have a solid client base that will follow you?

Are you ready to handle the business side of things (taxes, scheduling, inventory)?

Do you have enough savings to get through any slow periods as you build your independent brand?

If your answers are “yes,” then great, you’re already halfway there. If not, don’t sweat it. Now’s the time to prepare and get those foundations in place.

Step 2: Build Your Financial Game Plan

When you go independent, it’s all on you to manage your income and expenses. Here’s what to do:

Save up: Start building a financial cushion for at least a few months to cover any gaps.

Know your numbers: From booth rent to products, insurance, and taxes, know exactly what your monthly expenses will be.

Open a business account: Keep your personal and business finances separate from the start. This will save you a ton of headaches down the line (especially come tax time).

Step 3: Secure Your Space & Tools

Where are you going to set up shop? It’s time to lock that down.

Booth rental: Renting a chair in a salon is a good first step if you want some freedom without the full responsibility of a whole space.

Salon suite: Ready for more control? Renting a private suite gives you your own space to build your brand.

Home studio: Got space at home? Setting up a home salon can cut down on costs, but make sure it’s legal in your area.

Once you’ve got your spot, make a list of everything you’ll need, tools, supplies, décor, the whole setup. This is your space now, so make it work for you.

Step 4: Get Smart About Pricing

You’re the boss now, so you set the prices. But how do you make sure you’re charging what you’re worth?

Do your research: Check what other independent stylists in your area are charging. Aim to be competitive without underpricing yourself.

Factor in your expenses: Your pricing should cover rent, supplies, and taxes while still leaving room for profit.

Offer packages or loyalty programs: Clients love deals, and this will help bring them back consistently.

Step 5: Get Ready to Run the Business

This is where things get real, you’re no longer just a stylist, you’re a business owner. Here’s how to make sure you’re ready:

Get your licenses: Make sure you’ve got all the proper business licenses and certifications for your area.

Set up a booking system: You’ll need software to handle appointments, payments, and client communications. Try platforms like GlossGenius or Square Appointments.

Tackle taxes: Set aside about 30% of your income for taxes. Seriously, this will save you from a major headache later.

Step 6: Market Yourself Like a Pro

When you’re independent, you’re also your own marketing department. Here’s how to get clients through the door:

Use social media to your advantage: Post regularly on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Show off your work, engage with followers, and use hashtags to increase visibility.

Get referrals: Offer current clients discounts or perks for referring new clients. Word of mouth is still gold.

Build a simple website: Even a basic website can legitimize your business and make it easy for clients to book with you directly.

Step 7: Set Boundaries & Take Care of You

Being your own boss is exciting, but it’s easy to burn out if you’re not careful.

Set your hours: You don’t need to be available 24/7. Establish clear working hours and stick to them.

Make time for yourself: Schedule breaks and days off. You’re in charge of your time now, so make sure you’re not overloading yourself.

Ready to Make the Jump?

Going independent is a big decision, but it’s also one of the most empowering moves you’ll make in your career. With the right plan in place, you’ll set yourself up for long-term success, more freedom, and more control over your future.
